Reports for Campeon 2008

Monday 1 October - Brighton

6 furlongs on very soft ground was too much for "Camp" today, Adrian said he is very keen early and had nothing left coming up the hill in what was really soft ground. We will now look at getting him on the all weather and also look for a five furlong race on turf.

Thursday 13 September - Chepstow

Campeon was out well and led the far side until getting a bump at halfway just putting him off his stride but kept on to finish 10th beaten about 2 to 3 lengths. His jockey was happy with how he travelled and we musn’t forget he had to carry 6lb’s above his allotted weight and on that basis has run well. Both jockeys on our two horses confirmed the ground is a joke, firm patches with soft patches all over and neither knew which way to go but horses lose their balance on such a surface. Further entries will be posted when available.

Monday 10 September - Folkestone

Got him onto the track at last and indeed it was over 6 furlongs today and he’s run a real cracking race under a great ride from Hayley Turner. Out of the stalls first and led the stands side runners until a furlong and a half out and going into the final furlong was still in the first 3 but it was the 2 on the far side that got the result and "Camp" finished a close 5th beaten under a length. Hayley said he hung a little early but straightened up well and was running on all the way to the line and was sure 5 or 6 furlongs will suit, had a job pulling him up. A good run from Campeon and let's hope we can get him out again soon.

Saturday 16 June - Bath

The only concern was the draw and it got us beaten as all the horses wanted to race middle to this side and they kept pushing him wider and wider finishing up on the stands rails and Kevin said he went 50 yards further than the rest of those in the middle and could never get competitive despite him feeling well as he travelled on the softer ground which suits. Could have done with that middle draw. Further entries to follow.

Wednesday 13 June - Brighton

Not only did Campeon miss the break but his jockey very nearly came off rolling sideways after a few strides and still last of the 14 as they came to the 2 furlong pole at the bottom of the hill was still last but picked up well from behind staying on strongly to finish well but until his jockey, stable apprentice Kevin got to the unsaddling we didn’t know that when he came out of the stalls he stumbled and stretched and the saddle slipped back and Kevin couldn’t have any control and remarkable that he has finished so well with a slipped saddle. He finished 9th in the race but he was beaten less than 5 lengths which was a great run under the circumstances.

Tuesday 29 May - Chepstow

Hoping to get some soft ground today but it had dried overnight and this morning they changed it to good before racing. It was difficult to know what to do today and whatever interest had to be small as they were spread right across the track and yesterdays racing suggested middle to low held sway and in 12 we were in no mans land and though getting away well it was clear at halfway that the low numbers, ie far side were having the best of it and horses drawn 1,2 and 5 filled the first 3 places with Campeon finishing mid-field. Stephen Donaghue said he behaved well going down and in the race itself showed up well to halfway but he said the ground was dead this side and could see the others had a good five lengths on him on the far side of the track and though giving him a couple of cracks was pointless beating him about on his first run when it was clear what was happening and came back safe and sound. Further entries will be posted when available.

Sunday 28 January - Wolverhampton

Draw 8 today was always going to be a concern and we couldn't get to the front having to go 7 wide on the bend, Campeon losing his place and race over. It is crucial to have a low draw at Wolverhampton to get to the front and we may decide after talking to Milton in the morning to let Campeon have a short, well-earned break as he has been on the go since April 2006.

Friday 29 December - Southwell

A cracking run again from Campeon today leading until half a furlong out, only beaten a length to finish 4th. Mickey reported that he got the six furlongs well and Campeon will be out again soon.

Thursday 28 December - Southwell

A concern for the draw 12 was justified as the low numbers were on a faster strip of ground down the middle and they went off at a rare old lick. Campeon did well to finish 5th from his 12 draw and as long as Milton is happy with him in the morning (29th) he will run again tomorrow.

Friday 8 December - Wolverhampton

A cracking run from Campeon today to finish 3rd. Although drawn 8 he travelled up well with the pace and stayed on well in the straight, battling to the line. This surface certainly suits him and he could run back at Wolverhampton later next week or at Southwell on Tuesday. A great day out enjoyed by all shareholders.

Sunday 3 December - Lingfield

Michael Fenton was quite happy with Campeon's well being and Campeon travelled well until the turn for home but after all the rain that had fallen in the last 24 hours the track today at Lingfield was riding fast and this didn't suit our horse, changing his legs on several occasions, Michael not being hard on hime thereafter. He was fine after the race and may run at Wolverhampton this Friday.

Monday 27 November - Kempton

Campeon finished 7th today beaten just 2 and a quarter lengths. A good effort from our horse and Stephen felt that Kempton was too fast a track for a horse that likes to be up with the pace as the ones from behind come at you very fast and swallow you up! He did report that Campeon felt very well and we will now look for another race for him.

Monday 20 November - Wolverhampton

Was very much on his toes in the paddock and behind the stalls and he bounced out in front and rather than disappoint him, Franny allowed him to bowl along and at the furlong and a half pole he was still battling away and running into the final furlong still had his head in front but those behind began to close quickly and was passed in the final half furlong, the winner being Desert Dust who confirmed the form with him last time they met at Southwell. The second horse came across Campeon preventing him from getting 3rd and a stewards was called but the placings remained unaltered. Francis Norton was happy with the horse suggesting he will be winning one of these when it all falls into place when he gets that lead into the final furlong rather than have to make the running. If he is ok in the next couple of days we will send him to Kempton next Monday for either a 5 or 6 furlong contest.

Tuesday 31 October - Southwell

With the blinkers left off and a drop in grade to banded company the each way bet was there hoping we had the right draw in the 3 box. An hour before racing it was announced that the amount of rain around that track would be riding quicker than standard. Stephen had him out in 2nd place as the leader and the eventual winner went two lengths ahead both were finding a bit more and at the furlong pole it was clear on this faster surface that Borzoi Maestro wasn’t stopping and we just got touched off in a photo for 2nd place. Certainly showed a bit more of his old self today. Having spoken to Milton after the race he was quite pleased with the run and to confirm that the track was quick, the race was run in 57.8 seconds and to note that the last 5 furlongs run at the track weeks ago was 59.5 seconds and that one was a strong maiden race and it certainly highlights that our race to date was quick. If he is ok Milton says there is no reason why we shouldn’t go to Lingfield over 6 furlongs on Sunday. Will see how he is on Friday before declaration time and also to see whether we will get in. Is he on his way back? We dearly hope so.

Monday 28 August - Chepstow

We were given a bad draw in 3 and from good to soft ground overnight by the time the 5.55pm race came the ground had dried out and the last 3 races were won by horses with high draws. Franny Norton got away on terms in the centre but it wasn't possible to keep going as strongly as those on the stands rail who clearly had the advantage. We will now look for further entries and hope we can get the soft ground we need and a good draw!

Wednesday 26 July - Catterick

With blinkers on for the first time, it helped him concentrate and even when headed in the race fought back for his young jockey finishing 4th beaten just 2 lengths by horses that were well in at the weights and in a handicap would have been receiving much more from them. This was a sterling effort from the horse and when he gets his right ground and right race conditions we now know the blinkers work and his turn is not far away.

Tuesday 18 July - Beverley

A blistering hot day at Beverley today and the cheek pieces were applied to Campeon in the hope that it would make him concentrate. All went according to plan until a furlong and a half out where unfortunately we didn't kick clear enough and horses came on the outside of Campeon and from there on race over. He finished 7th of 17 runners and Neal Callan reported that the ground was no problem for Campeon. We will now look for a race in the next three weeks.

Wednesday 5 July - Kempton

Campeon looked great this evening, Ted Durcan bounced him out of the stalls in front and got to the first bend with a length to spare but coming off the bend two others came up on his outside and squeezed him onto the rails and as we all know he hates being closed in. After that Campeon's race was over. We will see how he is in the morning and will post up any further entries as they come in.

Wednesday 5 July - Kempton

Wednesday 31 May - Brighton

Going to Brighton today for "Good" ground but by the time the last race came the ground was riding fast. Liam Jones rode a very good race on him settling him in third place as the two in front went off at top speed but as they met the rising ground Campeon couldn't pick up. We will have to await some rain or go back to Kempton on the all weather.

Saturday 20 May - Nottingham

The plan today was to sit behind the leaders, pull Campeon out a furlong and a half out and then to go on and take the race. Unfortunately, things didn't go to plan as Campeon pinged the stalls so fast and was travelling so strongly for Shane to take a hold and tuck him in. Campeon hit the front and then weakened in the final furlong, still running well to finish 6th on ground he loves. He does need to learn to settle early in the race.

Saturday 13 May - Warwick

Unfortunatlely a bad draw again this evening in 11 and though rain arrived before the first race it hadn't got into the ground enough. He pinged the stalls as usual but was unable to get any cover racing wide coming into the straight in 2nd place, the downhill run to the final two furlongs didn't help and he lost his action. Prayed for the rain to come a lot earlier in the day, but it didn't. That's racing!

Sunday 30 April - Brighton

A combination of very firm ground at Brighton and maybe a run too soon after his Kempton run Wednesday evening are the only reasons Milton and Ryan can come up with for him not running to form today. We will see how he comes out of his race and we will now wait for a bit of cut in the ground or maybe send him back to Kempton.

Wednesday 26 April - Kempton

What a super run for Campeon on his first outing of 2006 finishing 4th (beaten only half a length and two short heads) and what a cracking ride from Jamie Spencer. Jamie pinged him out from the worst draw possible, managed to get him across and led all the way just blowing up in the last 50 yards. We are all very pleased, Campeon looked superb and we are hoping to run at Brighton this Sunday.

Saturday 15 April - Latest update 2006

Had his final blow out yesterday and is ready to run and is full of himself. Entries that will be made are as follows though where he does run will depend on the ground, whether we get in and of course opposition when we have seen the entries. 20TH APRIL RIPON 25TH APRIL FOLKESTONE 29TH APRIL RIPON 30TH APRIL BRIGHTON. Starts the season on a good mark of 64.

Friday 2 December - Wolverhampton

Campeon had been working well at home so we decided to run him at Wolverhampton trying to tuck him in, switch him off and then come with a run on the outside. Stephen Drowne reported that Campeon has a lot of pace and it ispossible to switch him off around the bends! He has done exceptional this season with 3 wins under his belt and will now have a nice winter holiday and he will be seen out on the track in March/April 2006.

Friday 25 November - Wolverhampton

Campeon had never been on this surface before and we were not sure how he would take to it. He burst out of the stalls and was in front after a furlong and George Baker didn't have anywhere to go and had no option to allow him to bowl along but he relinquished the lead a furlong and a half out finishing a close 8th. He has 2 more entries next week on the all weather at Southwell and Wolverhampton.

Thursday 3 November - Mussleburgh

We thought he would nearly win today with "Champion" jockey Jamie Spencer on board and Campeon and Jamie didn't let us down. Jamie sat in 4th till halfway, took the lead a furlong out and though headed he fought back gamely to win in the soft ground and end the season with his 3rd win of the year. What a super horse he will be next season. Our shareholders had a fantastic day out and we must thank Milton and all his hard working staff.

Friday 14 October - Brighton 2nd

Despite having a poor draw in the 5 box, Campeon pinged out of the stalls and Hayley Turner had no chance of holding him up as his usual fast pace took over but Hayley was determined to come across to the stands rail and instead of him dropping out when the eventual winner came past him, he continued to run on for his jockey and grabbed 2nd place on the line. Campeon beat 14 other good and older handicappers today and well done to Hayley and Campeon and hopefully they will both team up again in the very near future.

Friday 14 October - Brighton 2nd

This is the report.

Monday 10 October - Ayr

Campeon saw too much daylight early on in the race today and the jockey's ride did not go according to plan. The ground was ideal for our horse, the distance perfect but things did not go according to plan. If he comes out of the race OK he may possibly run on Friday 14th October at Brighton.

Saturday 17 September - Warwick

We knew with a draw of 16 of 17 it was virtually impossible to win at Warwick over 5 furlongs where the left handed bend is only a furlong away from the start. Richard found himself too wide as they came into the straight with too much to do with those on his left already getting first run. He stayed on strongly and was only beaten 5 lengths and he will be entered very soon when a suitable race is found.

Saturday 10 September - Goodwood

Campeon finished 5th in this competiitve event from a bad draw and was a sound effort considering our jockey could not ride him the way Campeon likes. Shane could not get any cover from the draw and led for 4 furlongs and was only beaten a couple of lengths. The horse is fit and well and a decision will be made sunday 11th September as to whether he runs at Folkestone on Monday 12th september.

Wednesday 31 August - Lingfield

A terrible draw in the 3 box really gave us little chance today and as the first race was won by a high number coming up the rail stands side and Campeon's race being won by the horse drawn 15 with the horse drawn 17 in 3rd. We must ignore this run and await the next time.

Wednesday 24 August - Brighton

CAMPEON 1ST. Well it all came right today for our horse and with rain continuing throughout the day we all knew this would suit him. Ryan Moore bounced out of the stalls from his wide draw, got him across to the stands rails and with a furlong to go still had a bit to do but he drifted across under pressure to gradually pick off the two in front and scored well by a neck from Milton's other gallant runner Zimbali. A great day had by all shareholders and the champagne was flowing freely and a creditable effort by Campeon.

Friday 19 August - Wolverhampton

Campeon was entered in the 8.25pm race at Wolverhampton. Unfortunately due to 2 nasty road incidents, our horse was unable to get to the course.

Thursday 11 August - Sandown

What a super run from Campeon to finish 6th only beaten one and a half lengths and a superb effort from both horse and jockey. Was always up on that far rail and stayed on strongly in the final furlong. The ground was a little firm for him but he battled very gamely. He acted perfectly in the saddling up box, in the parade ring and down to the start and is really learning his job.

Wednesday 3 August - Brighton

This was a fantastic run from Campeon, drawn 8 over 6 furlongs and ridden by Eddie Aherne. He jumped out of the stalls very well but was pushed out wide by one of the other runners. He was then forced to run wide on the stands side all the way and still managed to finished 2nd. Campeon won best turned out prize and Liz collected a case of John Smith's beer! He is in fantastic shape and it won't be too long before he is running again.

Friday 15 July - Warwick

Drawn 14 of 14 was as we expected totally against him as it would have been for the winner had he been given that stall number. FORGET THIS RUN.
